Proper Microphone

Short Version: Invest in a a proper external microphone. See the attached image.
Note: Do not use your phone. I know you may think it sounds good. It does not 98% of the time so just don’t use it. Do not use a built-in laptop microphone. This will make it sound like you are on the bathroom or an echo chamber.

Professional Voiceovers

Professional voiceover artists don’t use their built-in laptop or phones for recording audio. They use a professional microphone.

Note: There are several to choose from and if you’d like, I can point you over to mine; which is a trust $25.00 USB headset that I paid $22.00 for years ago. It never lets me down but does need quite a bit of audio enhancement removing pops and microphone noise after it is recorded. That is a Logitech H390 (Now called Logi) that I use to record.

Various Microphones

There are so many microphones out there that are used for several reasons. The more expensive the microphone doesn’t always mean it is better.

Note: I have tried the $200.00 and $300.00 microphones and you cannot hear me. I will be screaming at the top of my lungs and I sound like I am whispering so I always end up back at my $22.00 H390.

Logitech H390

The voice is really clear on this device. This device is not without its faults. Microphone noise, pops, 60h hum, it is supposed to be a noise canceling microphone but that is not the case. This thing picks up all the background noise it is supposed to be canceling out. So if you purchase one of these, be prepared to spend time learning how to edit audio because you will be editing and enhancing audio recordings with this device.

Note: Some other doodlers have suggested the other Microphones I’ve listed in the image. I make no claims to the effectiveness of those microphones. I’ve never tested them. They are merely suggestions taken from conversations I’ve been involved with in the past.

Phone Recording

The iPhone has a great microphone for phone calls but a professional recording device it is not.

Note: This is like my Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra which is marketed as a YouTube studio quality phone. It is not and I don’t use it as such. I have tried it and there is a lot left to be desired when using it for YouTube.

Blue Yeti

If you have the money, this is the best microphone I have used to date. It is extremely nice and I would definitely recommend getting one but they are expensive.

Built-in Laptop Microphone

These are not professional devices and should not be used unless you are going after an effect where you are in a bathroom because these tend to have a lot of echo and reverb within them. Don’t use these to record your doodles.
