Choosing your goals

Where to begin in photo editing? Have goals in mind when learning photo editing, especially for beginner photo editors. Figure out what it is that you want and why you are learning photo editing. Are you learning photo editing for fun or for business? If you are a beginner at photo editing, then set some time aside and decide why you are here and what you want to get out of these lessons.
Without goals, learning will be okay but there is nothing to achieve. Even if you want to learn beginner photo editing or go into more advanced photo editing to know why you are moving forward will give that sense of euphoria and accomplishment when you get there. Perhaps it is because everyone else wants to give you some lessons and then sell you on their products and you are simply looking for good tutorials for which to learn? How did you find yourself here?

Becoming a photo editing professional takes a lot of work and dedication. Goals allow us to keep track of our accomplishments and gauge our progress in photo editing or anything that we do in life. Different types of goals may be to:
- Add a skill to get a job
- Personal ambition
- Start a business
- Required for work
- Create videos
Once we know why we are doing something, breaking these goals down to smaller goals will make it easier for us to reach them. Taking on too many or too large of a goal at one time can be stressful and cause us to fail whereas breaking them down to smaller goals makes it much easier for us to reach them.
10 smaller accomplishments to reach 1 big accomplishment works really well. For example, if our accomplishment goal is to create videos, we know that images are simply a series of images or at least contain images. For this instead of taking on editing videos, learning to dit photos, computer navigation, obtaining all the software and learning everything that each software package does which sounds like and is an enormous undertaking, if we:
- Learn how to copy and paste on the computer then
- Learn how to open and close software. Next, we start small and decide we want to learn photo editing.
- When researching photo editing, we review, download and choose an image or photo editor. Now we figure out how to open an image in that editor.
- Once we can open and close the image editor, we learn about the tools within the editor and what they do.
- We now begin to learn about the features of that photo editor.
- Now that we are familiar with the tools and features of the software and understand what they mean, we start learning about different aspects of photo editing and photo editing terminology.
- Finally, we start editing the photos for personal use, then friends, then sharing on social media.
- Now that we know photo editing, we begin and start the process again for video editing.
We have now broken down an enormous task into much smaller goals to reach our final accomplishment. We don't have to follow the steps above exactly. The great thing about goals is that you control them. You make the goals for yourself. Nobody knows you better than you. You know what you are capable of and how fast you want to learn. You know what real world troubles you will have with reaching your goals. You know whether you have kids, a job that requires 12 hours a day and 7 days a week to pay the bills every month.
Choose an image editor
This is an important decision. There is a lot of photo editing software out there. Some of it paid and some of it free. Some of it isn't worth anything and some of it was just experiments when people were learning programming and the programmers do not actively update it. While we will list a lot of software to choose from in the next tutorial, these photo editing tutorials will focus upon Photopea, an online only alternative to Adobe Photoshop.
Adobe Photoshop is a subscription based photo editing software that requires a hefty payment every year to access all the software Adobe provides. Adobe Photoshop is a full feature rich photo editing software. Photopea is a free online photo editing software. Photopea has a downloadable app as well. The programmer has basically copied an older version of Photoshop but he has programmed everything himself. The software looks and acts like Photoshop.
There are slight and severe differences between the two pieces of software but for the most part, anything that you learn in Photopea will work in Photoshop and vice versa if the feature exists in Photopea. As one would expect, there are a lot more features in the paid Photoshop software that has a team of paid professionals working on it every day vs. Photopea but make no mistake, Photopea is very feature rich and is free to use. In some cases, such as object removal, we find Photopea superior to Photoshop with its very well written algorithms.
The skill required to create photos like this does not come overnight but having the right photo editor and by setting smaller goals we can get there and take the creations from your imagination and put them on the canvas.
